Medical Cannabis: Regulation of prescription and distribution

The plenary of the Cyprus Parliament has approved and passed on the 14/08/2020 the amendment to the Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Regulations of 2019 to regulate the prescription, distribution, and availability of medical cannabis. The amendments to the Regulations were made with a view to minimizing the risk of the sector falling into the hands of the illegal drugs-trade and the abuse by people seeking the treatment. The regulations provide the possibility of regulating the rational prescription and the scientifically substantiated use of the medical cannabis.

In particular, the new Regulation 97A reads as follows:

“The competent authority, after taking into account the opinion of the Advisory Committee, which is based on scientific evidence, and for the purpose of adaptation to scientific progress, may…impose additional restrictions on the use of medical cannabis including its prescription, distribution and disposal.”
