Changing your name - Procedure to follow

A Cypriot citizen has the right to submit an application with the competent authorities in Cyprus (the District Administration Offices) to change his/her name and/or surname, correct errors or make additions.

According to the Civil Registry Law, the concerned person has to submit the following:

An Affidavit in the prescribed form, accompanied by the reasons he/she intends/wishes to change his/her name and/or surname, and

Fee (currently €80) payable at the District Administration Offices.

Provided that the Registrar considers the affidavit satisfying, then the latter can proceed with the change of name with either its amendment and/or addition.

It should be noted that under no circumstances should the total number of the first names be more than three and the total number of surnames more than two.

Although the Law does not specify the reasons that can be used as acceptable grounds for the name/surname change, the Authorities should be convinced, among others, that there is no criminal intent in order to approve the change of name request.
