BRIEFINGS

Are there options for UK nationals to regain the EU citizenship?

Following Brexit, the acquirement of EU citizenship may be achieved by British people (of Cypriot origin but not only) who may regain the advantages of enjoying the freedom of movement within Europe for their future personal or business dealings.

Exploring the options to take on Cypriot citizenship to stay part of the EU

Cyprus is a member state of the European Union, consequently a Cyprus citizen is also a citizen of the EU who can travel and reside freely in any of the member states of the EU.  Dual citizenship/nationality is allowed both in Cyprus and in the UK.  The ways in which a UK national can acquire Cyprus citizenship are in essence as follow:

MINORS (UNDER THE AGE OF 18)

Application Type M121

M121 application can be submitted by either minors or adults (above the age of 18), who were born abroad on or after 16 August 1960 if at the time of his birth either of his parents was a citizen of the

Republic, or if his parent(s) were not alive at the time of his birth, either of them would have been entitled to become a Cyprus citizen had he/she not passed away.

Application Type M126

This application can be submitted by minors, who were born prior to the 11th of June 1999 in Cyprus or abroad and whose mother is a Cypriot citizen and father a foreigner or for minors whose father acquired the Cypriot citizenship after their birth. Additionally, the application can be submitted by minors, whose father or mother acquired the Cypriot citizenship by naturalization or by registration due to marriage with a Cypriot citizen.

ADULTS (ABOVE THE AGE OF 18)

Application type M71

It can be submitted by persons born prior to the 16th of August 1960, who are citizens of the United Kingdom and its former colonies, who originate from Cyprus form the male side and reside permanently abroad.

Application type M72

It can be submitted by persons born prior to the 16th of August 1960, who are not citizens of the United Kingdom and its former colonies and who originate from Cyprus form the male side.

Application type M123

This application can be submitted by any adult person who was born on or after the 16th of August 1960 and originate from a person, who became a British citizen based on the Annexation of Cyprus Orders in Council 1914 to 1943 or a person born in Cyprus between the 5th of November 1914 and the 16th of August 1960, and during that time, his parents habitually resided in Cyprus.

Application type M124

It can be submitted by adults of Cypriot origins, who were born before the 16th of August 1960 and are British citizens or citizens of any State of the Commonwealth and have habitually resided in Cyprus and/or resided in Cyprus for a continuous period of 12 months or for a shorter period of time, which the Minister shall accept (under special circumstances), immediately prior to the date of application, or has served in the Republic’s civil service and/or intend to continue to reside in the Republic, or where appropriate, continues to serve in a public service of the Republic.

CITIZENSHIP BY MARRIAGE (Application type M125)

Foreign spouses of Cypriot nationals who have completed 3 years of marriage and harmonious cohabitation with the Cypriot spouse and 2 years of residence in Cyprus, prior to the date of application may also apply for Cyprus citizenship.

CITIZENSHIP BY NATURALISATION (Application type M127)

A British citizen residing in Cyprus for at least 7 years (2555 days) and continuously residing in Cyprus 12 months prior to the date of application may as well apply for Cyprus citizenship.
